Exclusive interview with Jodi Gordon
Jodi Gordon is one of Australia's most popular actresses—a natural beauty who looks set for even more stardom with her feature film debut in The Cup (out October 13), and a role in the upcoming Rob Sitch-directed comedy Any Questions For Ben (out January 26, 2012), starring alongside Rachael Taylor.
The Mackay-born 26-year-old's first film role takes her to the excitement of the track. In The Cup—the story of jockey Damien Oliver's emotional 2002 Melbourne Cup victory—Gordon plays Trish, the supportive wife of Oliver (played by Stephen Curry). "It's great to be telling an Australian story, and playing a real person," says the actress, whose previous horse-racing experience extends only as far as a stint as Royal Randwick fashion ambassador.
"My idea of racing has been just about the fashion and dressing up. I don't even get into the punting! For me to do this film, with Damien as my husband, I went on that journey with him as a jockey, it was a whole new experience that opened my eyes up to racing."
Playing a dutiful partner comes more naturally to Gordon, who frequently supports real-life fiancĂ©, Sydney Roosters captain Braith Anasta, from the sidelines. "When I'm in a fiery mood and someone knocks Braith down, believe me, I tell them where to go!" But she dismisses the WAG acronym used to describe players' partners. "I don't think a woman should ever be referred to as a 'partner of' because we're people in our own right. We all had lives before our partners." One label she's happy to accept though, is 'wife'. I'm going to be very hands-on with the planning. I can get be a bit of a control freak," she admits, "so I'll be a bit hands on. No bridezilla though! I've got people like Braith to pull me up on that!" The pair plan to marry "next year; it's about finding the best time to pop it in between [Anasta's] games," she says, adding, "We want to get married, start a family—we don't want to wait too long." How many kids do they want? "As long as I get a girl and he gets a boy—we'll keep going till we get one of each!" – CHRIS URANKAR
